Technology is an area of study that deals with the relationship between human beings and their environment. It includes a wide range of techniques, methods, raw materials, and skills.
Throughout history, technology has made enormous impacts on the way people live. From the discovery of fire, which provided food sources, to the invention of the wheel, which allowed humans to travel within their environment, technological innovations have shaped the world.
Although technological innovation has been beneficial to many, there have also been negative effects. A number of philosophical debates have centered around the use of technology in society. These include techno-progressivism, which views continued technological advances as beneficial to humankind, and neo-luddism, which argues that technological societies are detrimental to human health and freedom.
The philosophy of technology is a relatively new discipline that emerged during the last two centuries. Initially, it focused on the impact of technology on culture. However, its growth did not match the rate of other areas of philosophy.
Some of the first works to explore the philosophical issues surrounding technology were written during the Renaissance. Francis Bacon, who was an early advocate of technology, wrote New Atlantis (1627). He believed that technology could be a force for good.
Another work focusing on the philosophy of technology is Industrial Society and Its Future by Theodore Kaczynski. This book was published in newspapers and books and was a critical look at the future of technology.
