The Importance of Relationships
Humans are one of the most social species on the planet and we place a lot of emphasis on relationships. Relationships are an important part of our lives, they provide a sense of belonging and help us to thrive in life. A positive relationship can add meaning to our life and make us more confident in taking risks and chasing after our dreams. Having a supportive partner can decrease stress, provide restful sleep, and promote good mental and physical health.
Relationships are an important aspect of our life and can take many forms including intimate, familial, friendships, and work. Intimate relationships are characterized by physical and emotional closeness. Relationships may also be defined by a mutual commitment, such as cohabitation or marriage. Friendships are based on mutual interests, admiration or affection and may be characterized by playful interactions.
A healthy relationship requires work. While many people equate this to hard, exhausting labor, the kind of work that goes into a healthy relationship is more like that of a hobby or school project you’re really psyched about. It’s enjoyable and even fun. The reward is more than worth the effort.
Intimacy in a relationship comes from spending quality time together, whether that is date night or just an hour a day when you can sit and talk or hold hands. It also comes from trust and a willingness to open up to each other. A healthy relationship is not afraid of (respectful) disagreement and both partners feel free to spend time with other people outside the relationship, such as friends and family.
