Poker is a card game played with a group of people around a table. Players bet into a pot that is formed from the bets of all players in a single deal. The player with the best hand wins the pot. There are different variations of poker, but the basic rules apply to any game.

First, the dealer deals cards face-down to each player. This process may take several rounds. After the fourth round, the hole cards are shown to the players. During this time, each player may discard up to three cards.

If there are ties among the cards, the highest card breaks the tie. Likewise, the highest card outside four of a kind breaks the tie.

A player can raise or call the bet made by another player. When a raise is called, the other player must match the bet.

To make a bet, a player must place a specified amount of money into the pot. Normally, the amount is the minimum ante. However, some games allow a larger bet.

Once a bet has been made, the player must bet or call if he wants to keep his position in the pot. The other players must match the bet or fold.

In some variants, a player may bluff by betting that he has the best hand. He is doing this to try to convince his opponents to fold. For example, if a pair of kings is good off the deal, a player might try to bluff with a pair of tens.
