The term entertainment has evolved to embrace a wide range of activities, from the personal consumption of movies and television, through the organization of parties, banquets, or other social gatherings; to the more public forms such as festivals, ceremonies, religious festivities, or satire. Although generally understood to be associated with amusement, entertainment may also have a serious purpose; for example, as in the case of education or propaganda.
Bates and Ferri (2010) posit that the meaning of entertainment is derived from the Medieval Latin verb intertenere, formed from the prefix inter and the suffix ten. The word is a compound of the root ten, which means to stretch out or extend. See Also: Entertainment News.
